Maricela Consuela de la Cruz was born in southern Spain to a family with little money and an utter hatred of the English.  Her three elder brothers worked in the shipyards with her father while Maricela was made to stay at home learning those tedious domestic duties that were bestowed upon traditional Catholic women at the time (cooking, spinning, sewing, cooking, spinning, sewing, repeat.  She never did get the knack for cooking). Her three brothers returned from the shipyards with their father and recounted stories of weary sailors fighting the snobs from England and occasionally attacked by pirates.

When she was old enough to know better, Maricela snuck away from home and followed her father and brothers to the shipyard.  Enchanted by the massive beams and billowing sails, she snuck on board a big ship.  Her plan was to fight the English snobs and to finallly learn to be an expert cook from the French so she could send money home to her family.  However, the ship sailed to the Spanish colonies in the New World.  So much for plans

Before landing, the ship was attacked by pirate Jose Gaspar, or "Gasparilla".  Not to be defeated, Maricela dressed up as a nun, grabbed the nearest crucifix and began praying the Rosary.  When the Gasparilla found her, he respectively crossed himself, and left her to her cabin.

Maricela had never planned on becoming a pirate, but decided that if they wouldn't hurt a nun, they couldn't all bad, like her brothers and father said.

Maricela then landed in the New World where she encountered very French and very sunburnt sisters Belle and Angelique, who were starting their own pirate league and offered Maricela a position on their ship.  Seeing this as an opportunity to enhance her domestic techniques (huzzah, divine French cuisine!)  and to "earn" some money to send back to her family, Maricela accepted.
