Born on Clare Island, to a family of seafarers, Eveleen McDermott would often disappear at night to "talk to the fairies," but no one believed her when she told of their wild adventures. No one except her life-long friend Owen O’Malley. When Owen was murdered, Eveleen was there, but escaped the grasp of his murderer, Bingham, to bring word to Owen’s mother, the infamous Grace O’Malley, who took Eveleen in.
After the attack on Murrough castle, Grace was captured and thrown into prison, and Eveleen found herself alone and without guidance. She wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth, pleading with her to interview Grace. When Grace was released, Eveleen followed her to sea, under the ruse of defending the British. Grace, not always confident in Eveleen's cognitive ability and despite her better judgment, taught Eveleen how to wield sword and dagger. Eveleen was a natural swordswoman, and with her innocent charm, she worked her way up to First Mate quickly.
Although always admiring the captain's hat, Eveleen contented herself with forever being a First Mate because Grace O'Malley convinced her that the fairies would be upset if she ever tried to pursue the title of Captain. O'Malley enjoyed Eveleen's company, never tiring of her quirky personality, naivete, and her odd tendency to sing and dance during battles.
Eveleen tended to Grace up through her last few moments of life. Only she holds the key to the secret of the last days of Grace's life, but she claims she forgot where she put it. Eveleen promised Grace she would continue a life of piracy, so she sought out a captain, one with a lot of patience, in need of a first mate who was the very devil with a sword.
